The way we work has undoubtedly changed over the past few years, and if you’re lucky enough, your office or worksite can be virtually anywhere. If you’re energy conscious or keen to reduce your carbon footprint, it might be worthwhile taking a few moments to take stock of your energy consumption while you’re working.

We’ve got some great tips on being energy efficient and greener in your workspace, and the best thing is that a lot of these tips will work anywhere, so whether you’re WFH or IRL you can be sure that your carbon footprint is A-OK.

BTW, if you really want to get on top of things, try out our amazing Carbon Calculator tool and find out how some little changes can make a big difference to your footprint!

Choose the right computer

Laptops are far more energy efficient than desktop computers, using less than half the power of their larger equivalents.

If you need to use a second screen, consider getting a smaller one, if possible, to reduce the energy needed. There’s also plenty of options out there with 5-star energy ratings too.

Using a hibernation/power saving mode on all computers and screens can ensure that whenever you’re away from your desk, your equipment isn’t continuously using up power.

Be smarter with your lighting

Let there be light! If you’ve got a natural light source, then make the most of it. Reducing the amount of fluorescent tube lighting in your workspace can not only improve your energy efficiency but also help make the space more calming and pleasant to work in.

LED bulbs, timers, motion detectors and a good old fashioned “switch off” campaign can all reduce your energy usage and help lighten your carbon load.

Ditch the printer to save paper

Does it really need to be printed? There are many ways to share and view files and documents digitally.

Invest in a temperature control system

In winter, simple things like keeping doors and windows closed while heating helps prevent heated air escaping and chilly air coming in. And no surprises that these tips work just as effectively in summer, keeping the cool air in and hot weather out!

Technology is your friend. Invest in a programmable thermostat that can automatically adjust your workspace temperature when no one is around.

Focus on sustainability

Aside from being a reliable source of renewable energy, solar panels are clean, longer lasting, and require little maintenance.

Start a green campaign in your office. You can start small by sending out a reminder for everyone to always check their computers are unplugged before leaving the office at the end of their workday.

They might be small changes at first, but they can all add up and contribute to a smaller carbon footprint and potentially greater profitability.

Being more sustainable is great for the planet, and great for your bottom line.
