If you’re getting a bit chilly in the winter months, you can be sure your pets are too. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the top tips to keep Milo and Fido cosy and happy this season.

Program your thermostat

Generally speaking, a home temperature in the 20°C to 22°C range is considered best for most pets, but for very small, thin-coated or temperature-sensitive pets, you might want to go a little higher.

Your vet should be able to advise the best temperature range for your pets. If you have a smart meter and access to our Tracker App you’ll be able to monitor the energy use more clearly if you do have to raise it a little higher every day.

Use pet heating pads or special clothing

Self-warming beds, special clothing or heating pads that automatically shut off - these are all low-cost and efficient ways to keep your pets snuggly and warm. And it works for all kinds of pets – special heaters can be installed in bird cages for example.

Check your air vents

If you have air vents in unused areas of your home, close them off and try and keep your pets in a specific area for maximum energy efficiency.

Properly seal the exits in your home

Cat flaps and doggy doors are incredibly useful but if not properly sealed can be a menace to your home temperature. Make sure they’re fully sealed to keep that warm air in the house.

Draft proof your doors and windows

Smaller pets can be incredibly vulnerable to an exposed space. Check the seals on the spaces where they spend most of their time and keep them as insulated as possible.

Consider using UV or ceramic heaters

Reptile owners will know all about UV or ceramic heating elements, but these kinds of devices can be used to keep all kinds of pets toasty – just be sure that there is added protection to prevent any risk of burns.

Check your heating appliances

Faulty gear can be a danger to your home as well as being massively energy inefficient. You can keep your pets safe by doing a check of your heating equipment paying close attention to electrical connections and dust or lint build up.

Turn off your lights and TV

There’s no need to leave lights on for your pets when you’re not there, as animals need natural light for their internal schedules. The same goes for the TV – you might think the dog likes to catch up on current affairs, but they’ll be happier with a toy or a bone, and you’ll be far more energy efficient.

Use a cold wash for your pets’ fabrics

A cold water wash uses up to 90% less energy and your pet’s favourite fabrics will come out just as clean and comfortable.
