Frequently asked questions

What is a solar PV system?

A solar photovoltaic system (PV system) or solar power system, is an electric power system designed to supply usable solar power by means of converting sunlight into electrical energy for both residential and business purposes. Solar panels capture energy from sunlight, which is then converted into energy in a usable form for household application to power the home or devices within the home by an inverter.

How does solar work?

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, are arranged in a modular fashion to take advantage of the space you have available on your roof. Sunlight is absorbed by the panels and converted to DC (Direct Current) electricity. This is then converted to AC (Alternating Current) power by the inverter – AC power can be used by standard household appliances, when operating at the same time.

When your solar system isn’t generating enough power (e.g. at night), your power will come from the electricity grid. If you generate more power than you use, it will be fed back into the grid.

What is the solar Feed-in Tariff (FiT) for the Simply Energy Solutions Solar Plan?

Customers who install a solar system through one of our preferred installers could be eligible for our Simply Energy Solutions Solar plan and receive the below Feed-in Tariff for up to 24 months. The Feed-in Tariff will vary depending on the state your house is located. Please note that the Feed-in Tariffs listed below will be occasionally updated, you will be informed of the Feed-in Tariff applicable to your plan at the time of sign-up.

  • NSW FiT: 19.5c/kWh
After exceeding the daily export cap of 3 kWh: 12 c/KWh
  • VIC FiT: 16.7c/kWh
After exceeding the daily export cap of 3 kWh: 11 c/KWh
  • SA FiT 15.5c/kWh
After exceeding the daily export cap of 3 kWh: 9 c/KWh
  • QLD FiT: 12.5c/kWh
After exceeding the daily export cap of 3 kWh: 7 c/kWh

The FiT for the first 3kWh of exports per day will be fixed for 24 months, the FiT for all exports exceeding the daily export cap is subject to change with notice.

What determines my solar system’s output?

The amount of energy your solar system produces is mainly determined by the size of the system. However, other factors do come into play, such as your location, the facing direction and angle of your panels (how much shade they get), the weather and the season.

Can solar panels be installed on a flat roof?

Yes. However, if you have a flat roof, our installers will generally install with a tilt frame. This not only increases your panels’ capacity to harness the sun (and therefore the amount of energy they generate), but also helps make the panels self-cleaning.

Can I increase the size of my solar PV system?

Yes. If you choose a smaller system and want to upsize, you can grow your solar energy system by purchasing more panels, as long as you have space on your roof and an inverter with additional capacity. Your installer will be able to help answer any further questions you have about this.
